The Lake District
The Lake District is one corner of England where you’ll want to linger. This sweeping panorama of slate-capped fells, craggy hilltops, misty mountain tarns and glittering lakes has been pulling in the crowds ever since the Romantics pitched up in the early 19th century, and it remains one of the country’s most popular beauty spots.
LessDublin, Holyhead & Keswick
We travel by ferry to Holyhead and then through north Wales into Lancashire and on to our hotel in Keswick in Cumbria. On the way, we stop at the Lake District Visitor Centre.
Lake Windemere
A very full day starts with a trip on the Lakeside & Haverthwaite Steam Railway and ends with a stop at Wordsworth’s Dove Cottage in Grasmere. In between, there is a cruise on romantic Lake Windemere, followed by a tour of Beatrix Potter World, where you will have a chance to meet Peter Rabbit and view Mrs Tiggy-Winkle’s kitchen.
Ravenglass & Whitehaven
After breakfast, we travel via Grange-over-Sands to Holker Hall and Gardens, home of Lord and Lady Cavendish. We then take the coastal route to the scenic village of Ravenglass and from there we go to Whitehaven to learn about the history of the rum trade. There will be numerous stops on the way to appreciate the wonderful landscape.
Carlisle
After visiting the fascinating Pencil Museum in Keswick, we travel through northern Cumbria to the city of Carlisle, just south of the Scottish border. Highlights include the Tullie House Museum and Art Gallery, notable for the collection of antiquities associated with Hadrian’s Wall. On our return journey, a stop off at Gretna Gateway Outlet Village completes the day.
Plymouth, Holyhead & Rosslare
We journey back to Holyhead for our ferry for Dublin, taking in the scenery along the way, happy with the memories we are taking home from this poetic part of England.
