We make our way to Drumshambo with a refreshment stop in Mullingar. Our next stop will be the Arigna Mines, where your tour will take you to the “coal face” where you will experience the extraction methods used by the coal miners. Each tour is guided by ex miners and you will see documents, photographs and mining equipment from the era. We will move on then to the Lough Allen Hotel & Spa.
A Cruise on the Shannon
Carrick on Shannon is the cruising capital of the Shannon and has 750km of cruising between the Shannon and the Shannon Erne Waterway. Today, while on board the Moonriver, a luxury weatherproof pleasure cruiser, you will see the sights from the water and hear the crew’s commentary which makes the trip both interesting and enjoyable. Back on terra firma we travel to Strokestown House and Gardens, home also of the National Famine Museum.
Parkes Castle & Lough Gill
Today we head in the direction of Sligo where we visit Parkes Castle, which is a fortified manor house. There is a blacksmith’s forge within the castle and you will have the opportunity to enjoy a relaxed walk through the gardens and experience their magnificent views. In the afternoon, you will board the “Rose of Innisfree”, a 70 seat cruiser to explore the lake and see the beauty of the shoreline. Live commentary will add to the enjoyment and understanding of your surroundings.
Carrick on Shannon & then Home
Today we will visit Glenview Folk Museum in Ballinamore. The museum offers guided tours of their private collection of over six thousand antique, historical and novel items. After our sightseeing, we will head for home with a stop off in Mullingar for some retail therapy as well as a snack.
